Australian superannuation funds stand out from their global pension fund peers in their appetite for equities and other growth assets. There are good reasons for this appetite for growth (and for risk). They include the defined contribution nature of most superannuation asset pools, the continuing retirement savings gap and the funds’ long-term investment horizon , which will soon (by way of legislative mandate) explicitly incorporate the post-retirement life stage. Low yields on cash and fixed income (defensive) assets in recent years have also contributed to the relative attraction of equities for superannuation funds.
